Eldest son of Richard Snowden; husband of Elizabeth

Richard Snowden of Birmingham, England, the founder of the family in Maryland as early as 1690. The inscription on his tombstone is all but faded by time. His record of burial is May 20, 1711. He was captain of provincial forces from 1700 to 1703. Originally from Wales, he had lived in Birmingham, England for a number of years.

To his son was patented, in 1719, the tract of 10,000 acres which included the plantations known later as Birmingham, Snowden Hall, Fairland, Montpelier, Oakland, Snow Hill, Avondale, Woodland Hill, Alnwick, Elmwood, Brightwood and Maple Grove.
